ride without a destination

I remember when mum was working back and sometimes couldn’t drive me to dance class, I would ask my older brother Scott to take me, and he always would… on the back of his motorbike.

It was the same story every time, he’d pick the car keys up in his hand, and then would stop abruptly, look back at me and say “hey Brookey will we take the bike?” I would always agree. Mum never knew, well when she reads this she will!

Totally unprepared for motor bike travel, I had no leathers, just lycra, hair in a tight bun, and soft dance tan shoes latched on to his passenger foot spots. It must have looked ridiculous, not to mention unsafe, but for us it was fun – I loved being on that bike with him. He would always drive fast, and If I was scared, I never said so.

Being on a motorbike, with no real place to be is a wonderful and freeing feeling for me. Much like driving a buggy/ATV, a boat, or more recently a snowmobile. With the wind in my hair, the sound of an engine, the slight smell of gas fumes and even some bumps and jumps along the way, I feel a oneness with everything in the world and completely present. Perhaps I’m just a country girl, or maybe it always reminds me of my younger years, being at the farm with our entire family, riding around the country side with not a care in the world.

Give it a try! Depending on where you live, I would consider renting a motorbike, or ATV, boat or snowmobile, somewhere scenic, with wide open roads and views. It’s a nice escape from the world, and it’s also a bit of fun!
